Background and purpose : Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate interacelullar parasite that infect a wide variety of nucleated cells in its intermediate hosts. Tachyzoites of Toxoplasma gondii in able to multiply in mouse macrophages. Inducing synthesis of nitric oxide (NO) by macrophages is an important mechanism of the host defense against interacelullar infection in mice. The 1.25 dihydroxy vit...

Treatment of logarithmically growing rat intestinal epithelial cells (IEC-6) in culture with vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 (25-hydroxy cholecalciferol), 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D3 (1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol), and 24,25 dihydroxy vitamin D3 (24(R),25-dihydroxycholecalciferol), caused an inhibition of the cholesterol biosynthetic pathway at two separate sites. At concentr...

The competence of the duodenal 1ƒ¿, 25-(OH)2-D3 receptor system in embryonic chicks was studied in the reconstituted cytosol-chro matin system. The sucrose density gradient centrifugation following incubation of duodenal cytosol with 1x,25-dihydroxy-[3H]-vitamin D3 revealed that a cytosol 1x,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 receptor existed in the duodenum of 18-day-old embryos. In the duodenum of 14-day...

We describe a patient with early diagnosed cystinosis who presented with nephrogenic diabetes insipidus in addition to proximal tubular dysfunction. Another feature in this patient was abnormally low serum concentration of 24,25 dihydroxy vitamin D3 (24,25(OH)2D3) with normal 25 hydroxy vitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) and relatively low 1,25 dihydroxy vitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3).

Background: Previous studies have found specific soy isoflavones (Genistein, Daidzein, Glycitein) demonstrate anti-tumor properties against several cancer types, including oral cancer. Few studies have evaluated whole soy extract, containing a combination of these isoflavones and other bioreactive compounds, which may function synergistically and more effectively against oral cancers. Prelimina...

The use of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 as an antiproliferative agent in the treatment of cancer is limited by its hypercalcemic effects. Analogues with equivalent or greater antiproliferative activities but smaller hypercalcemic effects have been developed. The antiproliferative effects of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 and four analogues were studied in HT-29 and SW620 human colon cancer cell lines, mo...

Physiological doses of radioactive vitamin D3 are administered to vitamin D-deficient chicks 16 hours prior to the preparation of lipid extracts of small intestine, plasma, kidney, and bone. Analysis of the vitamin D metabolite pattern is carried out via column chromatography on silicic acid, Sephadex LH-20, and Celite (liquid-liquid partition), countercurrent distribution and treatment with pe...

We describe a specific assay of 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D3 in human serum, based on isotope dilution-mass fragmentography. We added [26-2H3]-1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D3 to a fixed amount of serum. The steroids were extracted with chloroform/methanol and purified by liquid chromatography. The purified materal was converted into the trimethylsilyl ether and analyzed. Unlabeled 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin...

1. The term vitamin D is used for a range of closely related steroid compounds which possess the property of preventing or curing vitamin D deficiency. These include alfacalcidol (1α-hydroxyvitamin D3), calcifediol (25-hydroxyvitamin D3), calcitriol (1α,25 dihydroxy-vitamin D3), cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), dihydrotachysterol and ergocalciferol (vitamin D2 or calciferol). In veterinary medicin...

Previous work has shown that 1,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D3 rapidly increases calmodulin levels of skeletal muscle membranes without altering the muscle cell calmodulin content. Therefore, the effects of the sterol on the binding of calmodulin to specific muscle membrane proteins were investigated. Soleus muscles from vitamin D-deficient chicks were treated in vitro for short intervals (5-15 min) wi...
